And so this is Christmas. Wait — no it's not. Today I'm beginning the process of moving my Twitter musings over to Substack, for a variety of complex and non-complex reasons that functionally boil down to not wanting to give up the great Twitter community we've built, and not wanting to work for Twitter for free any longer. (The only X that will ever enter my lexicon is the one with Exene.) I'll still be doing a regular newsletter here of the existential Q&A variety, and I'll still post articles I've published and stuff on Twitter. But this is a major mobilization effort. I won't resent it if you don't, but I will resent it less if you'll consider signing up or even becoming a paid subscriber. I don't know how much more "salesy" I can be, but don’t miss out on your opportunity to get in on the ground floor of this fantastic offer. Here’s what I was gonna tweet about tonight and am now bringing to you via Substack. Enjoy!

Good move. I'm in. Love the insight about the band. Never could have articulated it but as soon as I read it, it was yes! that's exactly right.
Never mind the classics, if I could only listen to one Dylan song for the rest of my life it would be an easy choice: "Tough Mama" always, ALWAYS makes me happy when it comes on. The lyrics, the bellowed vocals, the woozy groove that you describe... even Garth's "oh, are we stopping now?" outro is just perfection. I can't imagine it ending any other way without losing some of the magic.
